Moving is exciting — and stressful. But with a solid plan, you can make the transition smooth for your whole family. Here's your complete checklist, organized by when to do each task.
8 Weeks Before Moving Day
- ☐ Create a moving budget (truck rental, supplies, deposits, etc.)
- ☐ Research moving companies — get at least 3 quotes
- ☐ Start decluttering room by room — donate, sell, or trash what you don't need
- ☐ Notify your landlord (if renting) of your move-out date
- ☐ Start collecting boxes — grocery stores and liquor stores give them away free
4 Weeks Before
- ☐ File a change of address with USPS (moversguide.usps.com)
- ☐ Transfer utilities — electricity (shop on PowerToChoose.org), water, gas, internet
- ☐ Update your address with your bank, insurance, employer, and subscriptions
- ☐ Research schools if you have kids — check ratings at GreatSchools.org
- ☐ Schedule any repairs or cleaning at your new home
- ☐ Begin packing non-essential items (seasonal clothes, books, decorations)
1 Week Before
- ☐ Pack a "first night" box: toiletries, phone chargers, sheets, towels, snacks, coffee maker
- ☐ Confirm moving company or truck rental
- ☐ Clean out fridge and freezer — use up perishables
- ☐ Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting (you'll thank yourself later)
- ☐ Pack kids' rooms last so they feel normal as long as possible
Moving Day
- ☐ Do a final walkthrough of your old home — check every closet, cabinet, and drawer
- ☐ Keep important documents with you (not on the truck)
- ☐ Tip your movers ($20-50 per person is standard)
- ☐ Meet the neighbors! Houston is friendly — a wave goes a long way
First Week in Your New Home
- ☐ Update your driver's license and vehicle registration
- ☐ Register kids for school
- ☐ Find a new doctor, dentist, and vet
- ☐ Locate the nearest H-E-B (this is Texas, after all 🤠)
- ☐ Change locks or reprogram garage codes
- ☐ Test all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
Houston-Specific Tips
- Electricity: Texas has a deregulated energy market. Shop rates at PowerToChoose.org before signing up.
- Flooding: Check your new address on the Harris County Flood Warning System map.
- Toll roads: Get an EZ TAG from HCTRA — you'll need it.
- Summer: If you're moving June-August, start early (5-6 AM). Houston heat is no joke.
